Tea & Talk for World Mental Health Day! 💚

World Mental Health Day, is a day to come together to discuss mental health. 💚

The people we support at Highgate House have hosted a Tea and Talk to discuss mental health. 🙌

Manager Kris said, “One of the games we played at our Tea & Talk whilst everyone was enjoying their cake was called Snakes and Cakes which is our version of a game of Giant Snakes and Ladders but with the Conversation Starter cards at various places on the board. 🍰🎲 When they landed on one, they would take the card and use the prompt to talk and share their thoughts, experiences and ideas. 💭 This was a fun idea and really helped people to engage in the session. Everyone had a great afternoon and the conversation starters have helped some people think about new things they would like to try in the future and the importance of discussing Mental Health!” 👏

Gaynor, one of the people we support at Highgate wrote a letter and read it to her fellow housemates at our Tea & Talk, which reads:

“Be Bold”

Mental Health can be a very challenging thing – we can find ways to deal with it.

One way is think of happy thoughts, feel good about yourselves – don’t let things get on top of you.

Have faith in yourselves.

Be strong. Be bold.

Say to yourselves “I am not going to let this get me down – I can fight this”

Mental health can sometimes be very worrying but you can say to yourself that you can support yourself.

You can be open and honest and say “I will get better” and gradually things will get better and you can say to yourself “I won’t let this get me down”.

Always say “I have improved” and you can say to yourself “I have got better and I know I can do it”

Believe in yourselves.

Always remember to think positive.

We can find ways to communicate with each other and we can try to concentrate on our wellbeing and maybe focus on things that matter the most.

We can help each other in our community and if we do activities to keep our minds off things, we can support each other through the bad times.

We are in a good place at Highgate House and we are safe, which is good to know.

All the tenants here are lovely too and I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to every one of you so much.

Yours faithfully,

Gaynor.

Well done Gaynor for writing such a fantastic letter to support everyone and provide some great advice! 👏

A great and fun way to encourage the people we support to talk about mental health and the importance, of understanding it’s ok not to be ok. 🧡
