Raising Awareness of Black History Month at Potens ✨

Black History Month is chosen in the month of October, with the ideology for the black community to reclaim their history. ✨

Georgia, Chair of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group at Potens said, “In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, known as the “father of Black history”, started Black History Week in February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Both men were instrumental in ending slavery.

Black History Month was then expanded throughout the USA and took place in this context, for the first time in 1970. It was held at Kent State University and for the first few years mainly took place in education establishments, especially those with a high proportion of African-American students. It wasn’t until 1976 that the then President of the United States, Gerald Ford acknowledged the awareness month and urged Americans to “honour the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavour throughout our history”. 2024 Black History month’s theme is ‘Reclaiming the Narrative.’ This is speaking about the contribution in history that is not shared. What would the world be like without black inventors?

Garret Morgan invented three-way traffic light in 1923.

Frederick McKinley invented refrigerated trucks in 1940.

Marie Van Brittan Brown invented the audio-visual home security system in 1966.

These are just to name a few, were you taught about these inventors at school?” 💭

At Supported Lives, they have held a session to raise awareness for Black History Month where they discussed inspirational people from Black History including Mary Seacole, Martin Luther King and Muhammed Ali! ✨

Admin assistant Khadija said, “We raised awareness by learning about Black History Month and discussing the influential figures and how they paved the way for so many. Staff also shared inspirational quotes and sayings which have been added to our wellbeing wall. 😀 It was a great session as everyone learned about different people and how they have positively impacted our society. We will continue to raise awareness of Black History!” 😊

Manager Allia said, “In our session for Black History Month, staff spoke about the most influential person they feel has contributed to society and the people we support enjoyed learning about the individuals. We all wrote down some famous quotes from these individuals and shared our thoughts and feelings on them. It was a great session for everyone involved in support of Black History Month!” 🧡

A great way to celebrate, educate, and inspire the people we support on Black History. 🌟
