Happy International Women’s Day!
This year’s theme is to ‘Accelerate Action’ for gender equality, emphasising the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality.
To recognise International Women’s Day, we asked some of the women at Potens ‘What does it mean to you to be a woman working in the Health and Social Care industry?’
Tara Hedges Area Manager – Southwest said, “Being a woman in social care for me is exciting as it’s a sector where there are so many inspirational role models. It is a leading sector for women in leadership roles, and there is no “glass ceiling” culture – you can truly see women in the highest roles which is fantastic when building your own career. I also feel a sense of responsibility to inspire those women coming through now to believe in themselves to push to their full potential in an industry that celebrates them.”
Nicki Stadames Chief Operating Officer said, “We proudly celebrate the achievements of women, and it would take all day to recount the countless accomplishments across Potens, but let me emphasise the extraordinary achievements of the incredible women I work alongside.
This past year has been challenging for the industry as a whole, yet, thanks to the unwavering dedication of women across Potens, we’ve successfully navigated turbulent times. Here at Potens, we’re proud to exceed the benchmark of 35%, with women holding well over 50% of our leadership roles. Reflecting on my own journey from nursing to my current role, I’m reminded that with supportive women by our side, there is little that we cannot achieve.”
Carol Toner Head of Quality and Service Development said, “Being a woman working in the Health and Social Care industry means that I can bring all that I am to work.
My skills go beyond what I have learnt during study and the experience of my life is one of my greatest assets as these have helped me to become this version of myself. I love working with strong supportive women who never forget to be kind to one another.”
Noreen Mitchell Director of Quality said, “My journey in social care began as a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) in a residential care home. I quickly realised that social care was not just a job but a calling. Determined to grow, I took on new responsibilities, stepped into supervisory roles, and challenged myself to lead by example. The journey was not without its challenges, but each obstacle strengthened my resolve. I surrounded myself with mentors and colleagues who believed in my potential, and I worked tirelessly to prove that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
Years of dedication led me to managerial positions until becoming a Director.
To those starting their careers, I say this: embrace every challenge, never stop learning, and always remember why you began. Your journey has the potential to be just as transformative as mine.”
