HT’s Journey to Developing His Confidence and Independence at Oak Unit – Queens Court 👏

HT who is lives at Oak Unit – Queens Court has a diagnosis of Korsakoff’s dementia and an alcohol related brain injury. When first admitted to Arbennig Unit in Queens Court, HT was extremely reluctant to get involved or engage with others, staff and the service as a whole. He very much kept himself to himself and did his own thing in his bedroom. HT did not appear confident in any areas and due to his poor memory, he found it difficult to adapt and remember things.

AB his keyworker, planned some time with HT to get to know him and what his interests and hobbies were and his background, it was noted that HT enjoyed cooking and being in the kitchen. As he used to back in his day cook in a vegetarian kitchen and provide meals for the vulnerable, it was also noted that HT was an outdoors person who loves walking, (limited now due to his mobility declining after obtaining his brain injury, he walks with a gait and a stick) the fresh air, mountains, trees and gardens. He also has an avid interest in artwork sketching and drawing. Building up a rapport with HT enabled him to form a routine and provide structure to his daily living thus then he started learning the new patterns and routines of his day. 🙌

HT has recently built a friendship with another person we support at Oak Unit and now incorporates this into his daily routine of getting up and making them both a cup of tea! Also, HT has built confidence and has managed to go on a day out to Caernarfon with his key worker to visit friends and family and collect some of his treasured belongings. This was a massive achievement for HT as he has always been so apprehensive about being out in the community following his history of alcohol abuse and poor memory. 👏

Due to consistency, time and interest HT has been able to form a routine for himself and enabled himself to become independent in quite a few areas which upon admission to Oak Unit we thought may take a long time to develop. HT now engages in the services activities, daily running of the unit, explores the gardens within the service independently, has made friends and done a long-distance trip out! Most recently, HT engaged in afternoon tea for Nutrition and Hydration Week by helping set up afternoon tea and has also taken on the role of cleaning up the kitchen after each mealtime this is what he calls his job and states that he thoroughly enjoys doing this for everyone! 🤩👏

Deputy Manager Kay said “It is extremely rewarding to see HT’s development whilst he has been at Oak Unit and it’s amazing how a little bit of time, determination and commitment along with continuity goes along way, and can improve quality of life for those we support. Well done HT and thank you for all your hard work and commitment to your rehabilitation!” 👏💛
