Individuals and staff at Potens’ Foxdale Supported Living service hosted their very own Great British Bake Off competition earlier this month at their home in Wirral – competing against each other to be crowned Foxdale Baking Champion 2017!
Foxdale Close supports three individuals with a range of learning and physical disabilities to live independently in a shared supported living bungalow in Wirral.
Team Leader, Justyna Karbowska, explains: “Huge fans of the much loved national programme, staff and individuals came up with a fantastic idea to hold their own ‘Great Foxdale Bake-off’ at the service.”
Each of three individuals supported at the service worked in pairs with a Potens’ team member and were set the challenge to create a magnificent fairy cake showstopper.
“All ingredients were prepared by staff before the event but the mixing, baking and decorating was completed by the service users with very little support. The atmosphere was fabulous and the kitchen area was decorated with heart shaped balloons and sweets to get everyone in the spirit.” Justyna explains.
Individuals and staff wore Mary Berry and Great British Bake Off presenter masks, and Area Manager Dave Andrews, who dropped into the service to judge the three final showstoppers, marked the occasion by wearing a Paul Hollywood mask!
“The Individuals really enjoyed the day and it turned out to be a massive success for everyone!” Justyna adds. “It was so much fun, with lots of laughing and joking, as well as some tasty and fabulous cakes being created and enjoyed.”
The day was won by Gill who received her prize of a meal for 2 at Bella Italia in New Brighton. Each individual also received a trophy to cherish and remind them of the fantastic event and their involvement in the day.
“The session really helped improve daily living skills, promoted interaction and certainly put a smile on everyone’s face. We have all agreed that this won’t be a one off thing and we are now busy looking into ideas for our next baking event!” Justyna adds.
