Transition to full independence at Walmersley Road

Read the incredible journey of RS who has moved from residential provision into her own flat in the community – a huge success!

RS moved to Walmersley Road in the summer of 2013, initially on an emergency basis. Unfortunately, circumstances meant RS wouldn’t be able to return to her family home. One of the main difficulties at the time of moving was with regards to R’s perception when working with male staff members. RS’ understanding was that if a male looked at her, then they were attracted to her. Rather than avoid contact with males, the staff team led by the manager decided to fully risk assess the situation, educate R and even designate R a male keyworker within the home. Over the years RS has gone on to build fabulous relationships with staff members of all genders.

RS has also made incredible progress within education. This started at college within a course teaching daily living skills. RS has gone on to study and complete levels 1 and 2 in sign language. RS also began to volunteer within “Jigsaw Bury” a registered charity, encouraging fun, freedom and independence for young people with disabilities. RS then proceeded to volunteer with the British Heart Foundation. Within placement RS began to develop key independence skills such as cooking, managing medication and budgeting. RS started to cook in the main kitchen without staff support and it was clear R was ready for a new challenge. This meant R moved within the home to an area which encompassed a mini-kitchen and independent facilities designed to further develop Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Over the next 5 years RS become more independent with ADLs and in 2020 applied for her own flat. In May 2021 RS was offered a suitable home which she could see herself living in and so accepted the offer. RS left Walmersley Road and moved in to her very own flat. RS was very excited to be living on her own with just 12 hrs a week support from Poten’s and from July 2023 has become completely independent with no support hours in place.

Congratulations to RS – What an incredible achievement
