Paul’s Journey to Self-Catering at Orme House 👏

Paul has made amazing progress with his independence since moving to Orme House in May 2022! 👏

When Paul first moved, he was having the daily meals which were prepared by staff, but he soon expressed an interest in self-catering, and it was agreed that he would receive a weekly provisions allowance to support him in doing so. He did however enjoy the prepared meals at the house and didn’t want to completely give up having them and so decided that he would self-cater for three days a week. 🍲

Paul would approach his keyworker for advice and suggestions on what he could be preparing. His keyworker suggested that Paul should consider different types of vegetables as each vegetable has its own nutrition profile and a varied diet would be beneficial to his health. His keyworker supported him in sourcing vegetables that were a little out of the ordinary and they would often go to ‘Tatws Trading’, a local business that stocks a good selection of worldwide vegetables. Armed with the ingredients, Paul set about cooking a varied selection of meals. 🥙

It is now over a year since Paul started to self-cater and the meals he has been preparing have been varied, nutritious and healthy. He has experimented with different vegetables, such as cassava, has cooked curries, Chinese meals and has also had some meat free days by trying out some vegan dishes. The meals are always well presented and thought out. Paul also experimented with making fruit bowls containing different exotic fruits and has recently been trying his hand at desserts, making cheesecakes and banoffee pies, but ever mindful of eating healthily. Paul always shares his desserts with his fellow residents! 🥧🤩

Paul has made really good progress with his independent cooking skills and with the support of staff at Orme House is now cooking a large variety of dishes that all look delicious!!

Well done Paul and to the team at Orme House for supporting Paul in developing his independent living skills! 👏 🙌
